SQR 6

Summary:
This article is mainly about the different ways an audience can help, or damage your reading. For example, sometimes when we are reading in front of an audience, we feel uncomfortable, and insecure. This is when our reading gets damaged also sometimes you try so hard for the audience to be able to understand you, that you start losing your clearness towards the audience. It’s sometimes good to have an audience, if you feel ok with your audience. Sometimes it helps you get an idea of the way you have to talk when reading, and the ideas that you have to present.

Question:
In p.53, the author concludes that "it's often difficult to work out new meaning while thinking about readers". Do you agree with this argument? Please explain.

Response:
In my opinion this is true, because when you are concentrated on who is going to read your writings, you start thinking more about how to satisfy the readers and your writing starts losing its strength and its clearness towards the reader. It's also important for us as writers to take in consideration our readers, because they let us know what type of words to use, and also make us get ideas that can relate to our readers.

Reflection on Audience Awareness

1.  Linda Flower stresses the importance of audience awareness in composing while Elbow concludes that the question/issue with audience awareness is when. How would you explain the connections between these two points of view? They both think that you should be aware of the audience in order to write something that they would be able to understand, but they think that when you think so much about the audience you sometimes start adding too much thoughts that your writing loses its clearness towards the readers.

2.  In general, what have you learned from Linda Flower's and Peter Elbow's article as a writer and as a reader? I have learned that in order to be a good writer, I need to use some of the readers strategies, and also mix it up with some writer strategies. For example, when i write, I look at who will read my text, and I take in consideration the type of language I should use, and the thoughts I should write down, this is using the reader base prose. Also when writing I get all the ideas that I have and put them in order so that they can make sense, this is using the writer base prose.

Response to Q1:
In my opinion, my rhetorical reading strategies are really weak. Sometimes when I finish reading something, I have no idea of what I just read, or I will only remember what the story was mainly about. My plans to improve mi rhetorical reading strategies consists in reading the headings of every paragraph, and also take time after every few lines to break down the text and try to understand it a little better.

Response to Q2
When using rhetorical reading, you look at what the author of the text is trying to inform you about, but you also look at the small but important parts of the writing. When using rhetorical writing, you take in consideration who the audience you’re writing to is going to be, and also you look at how you get your point across so that the reader can understand your writing. My plans for making my writing better consist of taking in consideration who is going to be reading my text, because I never do that.
